How to resume a paused allowance

When life gets busy — school fees land at the same time, a family trip disrupts the routine, or you simply needed a short break from automatic disbursements — pausing an allowance makes sense. Resuming it correctly ensures your child’s wallet picks up without duplicate payments, missed cycles, or confusion about the next scheduled date.

Before you resume: Check whether the pause was open-ended or set to expire automatically. An auto-expiring pause resumes on its own; manually paused allowances stay paused until you act.

Steps to resume a paused allowance

  1. Open the allowance detail screen. Navigate directly to your allowance using its deep link: https://kiddy.cash/family/kiddy/account/allowance/:allowance_id Replace :allowance_id with the actual ID shown in your Allowances list. This takes you straight to the allowance without digging through menus — useful if you manage multiple children or currencies like KES.

  2. Confirm the current status. The status badge will read Paused. Tap it to expand the pause summary, which shows the date the allowance was paused, any admin note you added at the time, and whether a scheduled resume date was set.

  3. Tap “Resume Allowance”. This button appears in the action bar at the bottom of the allowance detail screen. It is only visible when the allowance is in a paused state.

  4. Choose how to handle the missed cycles. KiddyCash will prompt you with two options:

    • Skip missed payments — the allowance restarts from the next due date. Use this when the pause was intentional and you do not want to back-pay. This is the most common choice for parents in Nairobi or other urban centres where budgets are tight during school-term transitions.
    • Disburse missed payments now — KiddyCash calculates the unpaid cycles and releases them immediately to the child’s wallet in a single lump sum. Use this sparingly; a sudden large deposit can undermine the habit-building purpose of a regular allowance.
  5. Review the next scheduled payment date. After you confirm, the allowance status changes to Active and the next payment date is displayed. Verify this aligns with your expected schedule — weekly or monthly — before leaving the screen. If the cadence looks wrong, cross-check the original setup by revisiting your weekly allowance configuration or your monthly allowance configuration.

  6. Notify your child. KiddyCash does not automatically notify children when an allowance is resumed. Send a manual in-app message or tell them directly — especially important for older children who track their wallet balance independently.

A note on financial rhythm

Allowance pauses are a normal part of family finance management, but frequent stops and starts can erode the consistency that makes allowances effective as a financial teaching tool. Research and educator guidance increasingly point to schools as reinforcing partners in this habit — worth reading if you want to align home and school expectations: why schools play a bigger role in financial literacy than most parents realise and how schools and families can collaborate on financial education.

If you find yourself pausing allowances repeatedly, consider adjusting the amount or frequency instead of pausing altogether.
