How to deposit money into a family account
Adding real money to your family account is the first step toward giving your children a meaningful allowance experience. Think of the family account as a shared wallet for your household — you deposit funds here first, then decide how much each child receives. If you haven’t set one up yet, start with creating a family account before continuing.
Whether you’re topping up from M-Pesa in Nairobi or sending a bank transfer from anywhere across Africa, the process is straightforward. This guide walks you through every step.
Before you start
Make sure you have:
- A verified KiddyCash account with KYC (identity verification) completed
- An active family set up in the app
- A funding source ready — such as M-Pesa, a debit card, or a linked bank account
What is the family account layer? KiddyCash is built in layers. The family account sits at the top — it holds the real money you deposit. From there, you allocate funds into your children’s individual wallets as allowances. Nothing moves to a child’s wallet until you deliberately send it. This keeps you in full control.

Steps to deposit money
-
Open the KiddyCash app and sign in to your parent account.
-
Go to your family dashboard. Tap the Family tab at the bottom of the screen. If you manage more than one family, select the correct one from the list.
-
Tap “Deposit.” You’ll find this button near the top of the family dashboard, next to your current balance. You can also go directly to the deposit page at https://kiddy.cash/family/:family_id/deposit — replace
:family_idwith your actual family ID, visible in your account settings. -
Enter the amount. Type in the amount you want to add. Balances are displayed in your local currency — for example, KES if you’re based in Kenya.
-
Choose a payment method. KiddyCash supports:
- M-Pesa — enter your M-Pesa registered phone number and confirm the STK push prompt on your phone
- Debit or credit card — enter your card details and authorise the payment
- Bank transfer — follow the reference instructions to send from your bank
-
Confirm the deposit. Review the amount and payment method, then tap Confirm. For M-Pesa users, check your phone for the payment prompt and enter your M-Pesa PIN to complete the transaction.
-
Wait for confirmation. Most deposits reflect within a few seconds for M-Pesa. Card and bank transfers may take a few minutes. You’ll receive an in-app notification and an SMS once the funds land.
-
Check your family balance. Once confirmed, your new balance will appear on the family dashboard. You can also review it in detail by visiting how to view your family account balance.
What happens next?
Your deposited funds sit in the family account until you allocate them. You can distribute money to your children’s wallets manually or set up recurring allowances on a schedule. Tips
- Deposit a buffer amount — having extra in the family account means allowances go out on time even if you forget to top up.
- All transactions are logged. You can review deposit history from the family account screen at any time.
- If a deposit fails, double-check that your M-Pesa number is correct and your account has sufficient balance.
